چکیده

A systematic experimental study was performed to elucidate the conditions for which cellular patterns of diluted hydrogen diffusion flames near extinction were observed. The formation of cellular instabilities was studied for several burners: jet burners (axisymmetric jet and two-dimensional jet) and a novel one-dimensional burner. The fuel and oxidizer Lewis numbers and the initial mixture strength (fuel-to-oxygen concentration ratio normalized by the stoichiometric value) were identified as the key governing parameters. The formation of cellular flames occurs for low reactant Lewis numbers (less than one) and near the extinction limit. For the jet burners, the parameter space for cellularity was found to decrease with either decreasing initial mixture strength, either increasing the fuel jet velocity. For a given fuel mixture, the wavelength associated with the cellular instabilities was found to decrease with either decreasing oxygen concentration, or increasing the fuel jet velocity. To study the supression of hydrodynamic effects on the cellular instabilities, a unique burner was constructed to experimentally realize a onedimensional unstrained planar non-premixed flame, previously only considered in idealized theoretical models. The results shos that when the oxidizer diffuses against the bulk flow the propensity of cellular instabilities increases with decreasing the initial mixture strength which is in agreement with the theoretical predicitions for this type of burner as well as experimental results for jet diffusion flames.

Research on Cellular Instabilities of Lean Premixed Syngas Flames under Various Hydrogen Fractions Using a Constant Volume Vessel

An experimental study of the intrinsic instabilities of H2/CO lean (φ = 0.4 to φ = 1.0) premixed flames at different hydrogen fractions ranging from 0% to 100% at elevated pressure and room temperature was performed in a constant volume vessel using a Schlieren system. The unstretched laminar burning velocities were compared with data from the previous literature and simulated results. The resu...

Cellular burning in lean premixed turbulent hydrogen-air flames: coupling experimental and computational analysis at the laboratory scale

One strategy for reducing US dependence on petroleum is to develop new combustion technologies for burning the fuel-lean mixtures of hydrogen or hydrogen-rich syngas fuels obtained from the gasification of coal and biomass. Fuel-flexible combustion systems based on lean premixed combustion have the potential for dramatically reducing pollutant emissions in transportation systems, heat and stati...

Stability of planar flames as gasdynamic discontinuities

The stability of a steadily propagating planar premixed flame has been the subject of numerous studies since Darrieus and Landau showed that in their model flames are unstable to perturbations of any wavelength. Moreover, the instability was shown to persist even for very small wavelengths, i.e. there was no high-wavenumber cutoff of the instability. In addition to the Darrieus–Landau instabili...

A comparative numerical study of premixed and non-premixed ethylene flames

Detailed numerical simulations of premixed and non-premixed C2H4/air flames were conducted, using six available kinetic mechanisms. The results help assess differences between these mechanisms and are of interest to proposed hydrocarbon-fueled SCRAMJET concepts, in which C2H4 can be expected to be a major component of the thermally cracked fuel. For premixed flames, laminar flame speeds were ca...

Pulsating and Hydrodynamic Instabilities at Large Lewis Numbers

The dynamic behavior of freely propagating premixed flames with large Lewis numbers was computationally simulated using a sixth-order central difference scheme and non-reflective boundary conditions. Results in the linear stage of the instability growth show that the growth rate dramatically decreases with increasing Lewis number and that the large activation energy excites the pulsating instab...
